Amorgos – A Hub of Speleological and Geological Research

The Municipality supports the major expedition that highlights the island’s natural wealth.

For the second consecutive year, Amorgos has become a center of speleological and geological exploration. The island hosts an interdisciplinary mission bringing together scientists from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and speleologists from Thessaloniki, Peloponnese, Kavala, Athens, and Crete. The team continues last year’s groundbreaking work, when the deepest cave of the Cyclades was discovered — an achievement that placed Amorgos at the forefront of scientific interest.

This year’s mission unfolds with even greater momentum. Participants are systematically documenting new caves, cleaning the Vothonas of Chora, and conducting valuable geological studies that shed light on the island’s unique geoheritage. This ongoing research not only safeguards the natural wealth of Amorgos but also integrates the island into the broader network of European scientific cooperation.

The results of the expedition will be presented to the public on Wednesday, October 1st, at 19:00, in the multipurpose hall in Chora. It will be a wonderful opportunity for locals and visitors to learn more about the remarkable work being carried out.
